The first part of our 2 week vacation is visiting our family in Napa. The boys are getting used to the long road trip & they are troopers. We try to split the journey up over 2 days & take a couple of breaks. But they’re awesome. I love everything about my children, but what I may admire most is their love of family. They seem to crave that family connection – which I think may be a primal need inside of us all. They adore their cousins. It touches my heart to see them play & even annoy each other. I pray these be life long friendships. My kids remind me daily that it’s never too late for God to fulfill a dream & that His way is vastly different & better than mine.

A true friend will remind you who you are when you forget & find yourself in a valley of self doubt. They know how you like your coffee. Or if you need coffee. They don’t let you wear mom jeans. You don’t have the hide parts of your personality or life from them. They’d see thru you even if you tried. They don’t drag you down. They don’t make you feel drained. They respect your time, boundaries & beliefs. Near & far: I have true friends. I hope they can say the same of me.

Someone talked me out of doing something my heart was not in. I want to encourage you today – do not invest in something your heart isn’t in. Spare yourself the time & resources! Listen to people who care about you & want you to succeed! Do not push away people who want the best for you. Listen to their wisdom. The wounds of a friend can be trusted!

Yes to life! Yes to things that breathe life into my lungs! Yes to waking up on the right side of the bed – anticipating the day ahead! Yes to second chances. Yes to the millionth chance. Yes to one more try. Yes to asking for help! Yes to getting out of my own way. Yes to getting out of God’s way. Yes to His ideas & plans. Yes to doing things that shatter your comfort zone. Yes to creativity. Yes to exercise. Yes to wise choices. Yes to leaving it all out on the field today. Yes to sports metaphors.

Today, I think NO. No more negative thoughts. No more being discouraged. No more making fun of myself – specifically my weight. No more being frustrated by things out of my control. Mostly, no more surrendering my hope. I think NO. No more. Donesies. Maybe I’ve got some fight in me left after all.

My kid said something profound. When asked to wait, he said, “Waiting is hard.” He’s right. It is. We live in a fast food society where we want everything now. Even in church. Even in our relationships with God. We want God to answer us right now – & give us the answer we want. Though in my personal experience, God’s timing & answer are never what I thought they should be but it’s always been the best. So be brave. Wait. Work hard. And wait. And wait some more.
